| The part played by the men and women of Coventry during 'The Great War' added further laurels to the historic records of the city. Though holding a place foremost among the great munitions producing centres, few towns gave a larger proportion of their men to the fighting forces, and it was considered fitting that the memory of these brave men should be preserved by a worthy memorial in their native city, "a memorial which might testify to future generations the incalculable debt which every citizen owes to those heroes who gave their lives for their country, as well as those who fought and were spared to return". Following a successful appeal in 1919, AGBP31,562 was raised by public subscription to purchase land from the Gregory Family to become the City's War Memorial Park. The land was formally handed over to the Corporation in October 1920 and the War Memorial Park officially declared open on the 9th July 1921. In February 1923, the War Memorial Committee concurred the planting of trees by the citizens in memory of fallen relatives, with plaques suitably inscribed. The cost of the plaques and memorial trees would be 25s inclusive, the trees forming the avenues along the main walks. A further appeal raised the funds required for a War Memorial which was unveiled and dedicated by Field Marshall Earl Haig on the 8th October 1927. Eighty years after the dedication of the Memorial, this book explores the men behind 'The Great War' memorial plaques and traces the stories of those commemorated. | |||||||||
